Reverse Osmosis sucks away all minerals from water and the water without minerals is extremely bad for health. India's national green tribunal has banned RO systems. Which leave less than 500 total dissolved solids per litre. RO is banned in some other countries as well. Those who regularly use RO should consider switching to other water purification systems.

Proposed regulation is not the final word and environment ministry will await comments from the public for 30 days.

The union environment ministry has published a draft notification that effectively prohibits users from installing membrane-based water purification, mainly reverse osmosis, systems in their homes, if the water has been sourced from a supply that meets the Bureau of Indian Standard's (BIS) Drinking water norms.

Despite the lack of proven scientific research, proponents of alkaline water still believe in its proposed health benefits. These include:

• Colon-cleansing properties
• Immune system support
• Hydration, skin health, and other detoxifying properties
• Weight loss
• Cancer resistance
